Cataracts are a very common cause of poor vision. They occur as we get older. This is by far the commonest cause but there are other forms of cataract as well. The lens inside the eye gradually becomes less clear and this is called a cataract. With time it can deteriorate, gradually making vision more hazy and if left, may lead to blindness.
Cataract removal
A straightforward operation involves removing the misty lens and replacing it with an artificial plastic lens which is called an implant. This stays there forever and allows you to see clearly again.
Modern cataract surgery has a very high success rate and there is no need anymore to wait until your cataract has "matured" before removing it
Before the operation
Before surgery a detailed eye health and general health check will take place.
Different measurements of the eye will be taken using sophisticated machines in order to help decide which implant to use during the operation to ensure that you have the best possible vision after surgery.
During the operation
Most operations are done under a local anaesthetic. That means that you will be awake and you will be able to hear what is happening and communicate with your surgeon. You will be able to see some lights and movement but not any details of the instruments used.
You will not feel any pain as the eye will be anaesthetised.
It usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes and most people go home a few hours later.
After the operation
You will need to use eye drops for a few weeks - an antibiotic drop to prevent infection and a steroid drop to help reduce inflammation.
You can usually go back to your everyday activities. However for about 10 days you will need to avoid things that could potentially cause damage to the eye or cause infection such as rubbing the eye, contact sports, strenuous exercise, swimming, wearing make up and being exposed to a dusty environment.

Posterior capsule rupture (PCR) may be a complication during cataract surgery. In an audit of 416 cataract operations performed by myself the PCR rate was found to be 0.48%. The results are compared with the national average in the chart above
